Taos Village InfoOn The MountainWhite Feather is a fantastic place to start for beginners, and a nice long run as well. Take Lift #5 to the top, jump off onto High Five which will quickly connect with White Feather to take you through some trees and meander back down to the bottom. For a change of scenery later on in the day, off of Lift #5 take High Five to Lift #2, and from there you can take Honeysuckle over to the #4 Kachina Lift. Intermediates should make there way up Lift #5, and down across Porcupine where they can spend the day playing on Powderhorn and Lower Stauffenberg. Advanced/Experts will truly enjoy Kachina Peak and the Highline Ridge with a host of black and double black diamonds to choose from. High Traverse along the West Basin Ridge also has quite a few choices for finding your way straight down. Ski and Board SchoolTaos has wonderful Private Lessons, Group Lessons, the Yellowbird Beginners Program and the Greenbird Package (for graduates of the Yellowbird Program). Choose a morning lesson, full day lesson, or lessons for the week! The VillageYou will find some great places to eat, along with a few shops for essentials scattered about the village at Taos Ski Valley, but for everything else its best to head into town. Attractions and ActivitiesIf youre not up to skiing or snowboarding for a day, why not try some of Taos other great winter activities. Choose from snow-shoe hiking, tubing, guided snowmobile tours, winter fly fishing, pueblo tours, horse drawn sleigh rides, or Red Rivers unique Night Sky Adventure, a powerful telescopic universe tour that takes advantage of the altitude and the clear winter skies. ShoppingThe majority of Taos residents are artists of one type of another, so you can look forward to finding one-of-a-kind gifts and conversation pieces at local boutiques, museum shops, crafts fairs, and artisan's workshops. DiningTims Stray Dog Cantina near the slopes is the go-to spot for New Mexican specialties like blue-cornmeal chili rellenos and mole chicken enchiladas and, of course, great margaritas. For a bit higher-end, The Bistro at the base-area Edelweiss Lodge and Spa serves upscale comfort food. Stone-fired pizzas, tapas and entrees like braised lamb shank with blended mashed potatoes should restore the calories you burned hiking up Kachina Peak. NightlifeApparently back in the day, Ernie Blake stashed pitchers of martinis in tree wells around the mountain for skiers needing a dash of fortitude. Toast the tradition at the slopeside Martini Tree bar where vintage photos capture the spirit of the resorts early days. As you might suspect, late-night revelry at Taos stays to a minimum "everyones too tired after all the double black diamond runs! But you can catch live music or karaoke every night in the bar at the Hotel St. Bernard, a Taos landmark owned by the legendary ski instructor Jean Mayer. |
