The Village
Happo One, part of Hakuba Village, is well known for having the feel of a real mountain village. What used to be a small farming village is now a fairly large resort village with a fascinating culture, and has a number of different centres where you're sure to find whatever it is you need.
Attractions and Activities
The Hakuba Valley has lots of great activities available including snow rafting, hot air ballooning, snow shoeing, cross country skiing, mountain biking and trekking tours.
Backcountry - In Hakuba skiing/riding off piste is taken seriously and perhaps for good reason. The only way to really explore this regions backcountry terrain is with a guide.Whether you are a first timer in the backcountry or experinced we can point you in the right direction.
Matsumoto Castle & Daio Wasabi Farm Tour - Designated as one of the four "National Treasures" this full day tour includes a stop at the largest Wasabi Farm and the chance to sample Wasabi ice cream.A Japanese lunch is also included and the opportunity to explore numerous stores, galleries and craft stores.
After skiing or snowboarding all day MAKE SURE you go to an onsen - it is a hot spring usually located outdoors. Nothing will sooth and rejuvenate your aching muscles better, but be warned that you are not allowed to wear bathing suits. Men and women usually separated.
Shopping
Happo One has a couple of ski and snowboard equipment and rental shops, souvenir and gift stores.
However, the main bulk of shops are in the town of Hakuba just five minutes down the road, where youll find well stocked supermarkets, large outdoor sports stores, a laundramat and the post office.
Dining
A good selection of restaurants and bars line the narrow streets in the village of Happo One. Japanese restaurants serve regional dishes focusing on local mountain vegetables, noodle dishes and rahmen.
The Korean BBQ Restaurant is very popular, you cook your own meat over hot coals at your table; great fun with a group of friends. There are also Italian, Mexican and Chinese restaurants.Gravity Worx is a cozy log cabin great for pizza, pasta and salads if you are just trying to ease yourself into all the fantastic Japanese cuisine on offer.
Nightlife
At first glance the Happo One and Hakuba nightlife dont appear as lively as you may find in other ski and snowboard resorts worldwide; however, with a little exploring youll find small cosy bars, a beer hall, karaoke bars and a nightclub. On a recent visit we met a Kiwi called Troy who owns Tracks Bar.
