Hakuba
|
"Hakuba was my very first resort I visited in Japan, having spent most of my life in Colorado I was worried that Japan would only offer small rounded hills. Hakuba is located on a stunning mountain range and a the valley is full of unique and wonderful ski resorts....most of these are available on one lift pass.
With easy access from Tokyo via train and bus makes this a great combination resort with a city stopover before or after you head to the slopes of Hakuba.The nice thing about Hakuba is it still retains a natural Japanese charm to the area without being overcrowded with Westerners."

Resort
Located in the north western corner of Nagano prefecture, just a few hours northwest of Tokyo in the stunning Japanes Alps, lies the alpine village of Hakuba. The centerpiece of Hakuba valley is Happo One (pronounced 'oh-neyh' not like the number: one), with over 1,000 vertical metres and a total of 31 lifts this place is one of the largest and most famous ski resorts in Japan. One of only eight resorts in the picturesque valley, Happo One is most famous for hosting the men’s downhill skiing and slalom events in the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics.
Relatively undiscovered by the western ski and snowboard travel markets, Happo One has a good record of deep, light, powder snow and holds some of Japan’s best terrain. On fresh powder days, Happo One doesn't seem to suffer from the mad rush for 'first tracks'. Early risers on will be rewarded with the pick of the powder stashes and you can almost have the place to yourself for the early part of the morning.
The terrain across the Hakuba valley caters to all levels of skiers and snowboarders with wide open powder fields and long groomed trails all set amongst stunning alpine views, not to mention some incredible off-piste for those seeking a challenge. Happo One also boasts some of the highest snowfalls and longest vertical pitches in all of Japan.
* Hakuba All Mountain Pass
