Fernie Alpine Resort Village Info

"Why not try a snowshoe tour and learn about Fernie's history and the mountain enviroment through an interpretive program. This is an energising and interesting way to explore the mountain through knowledgeable guides."

Sarah Headifen - Ski Traveller

On The Mountain

Fernie is as steep as you want it to be¦ While it may have a world renowned reputation for being steep and deep, that doesnt mean there isnt plenty to keep Beginners occupied. There are over two dozen green runs around the village, including Bambi and Cedar Trail. And for a nice long run, take The Great Bear Express Quad and wind your way back down via Lizard Traverse

Intermediate skiers and riders will be spoilt for choice, as the majority of the mountain caters just for them. All five bowls will have something your level to peak your interest, so why not start out with a ride up The Timber Bowl Express Quad, and a ride down on Morning Glory and Falling Star. And be sure not to miss Cruiser in the Cedar Bowl.

Advanced/Experts will be happy to know the steep runs at the top of the mountain are as exhilarating as any piste in the world. There are too many to choose from, so might as well start out on The White Pass Quad and work your way through the trees on Surprize.

The Village

Fernies quaint atmosphere makes for a small and friendly village. There may not be many shops right on the mountain, but youll still find the necessities (ski/snowboard equipment, clothing, accessories, and cafes). The township is a mere three miles away, where you can head for more shopping and nightlife.

Attractions and Activities

At the base of the Resort, make tracks along 10km (6 mi) of cross-country ski trails. Scenic community trails run approximately 18 km (11 mi) along the Elk River.

Snowmobilers will find easy trail access up into the mountains or directly from town.

Exceptional winter snowshoeing can be had on Fernie's snow-covered mountain biking trails and along the gentle Dyke Trail.

Cat-skiing is also popular in the area at the renowned Island Lake Lodge, Powder Cowboy and Fernie Wilderness Adventures.

Shopping

Fernie is by no means a shopping Mecca, but there are plenty of stores to browse (particularly on 2nd Avenue in Historic Downtown Fernie), including alpine sport stores, local arts, crafts and glassware, jewellery and clothing. There is also a grocery store.

Dining

Although relatively small and out of the way, there are plenty of dining options on and off the mountain. The Curry Bowl (in Fernie town) offers delicious Asian cuisine, with a mix of Indian, Thai and Japanese, while Las Tres Hermanas has excellent Mexican dishes and highly popular margaritas. On the mountain, Lizard Creek Lodge has a range of different treats and local wines; Yamagoya has excellent Japanese fare, and Gabriella's Little Italy Pasta Place is the perfect place to carbo-load on tasty pastas and focaccia breads.

Nightlife

Fernie has a laid-back, relatively quiet nightlife, so is not for those looking for a huge off-slope party. The Grizzly Bar is perhaps Fernie's most popular aprs-ski hangout and it attracts quite a crowd with live music and dancing on weekends. For those looking for some more serious dancing, Eldorado Lounge is open every day except Sundays, while Kelsey's also has a lively, pub-style ambience. For those looking to relax and unwind in a quieter atmosphere, the Lizard Creek Lodge Lounge and the Pub Bar and Grill both offer comfy couches, big-screen TVs and at the Pub Bar, pool and foosball. There is also a movie theatre.
