January 17th officially marked the snowiest start to a season ever, keeping our record breaking snow season going. We are hoping you can help us get the word out!!!

Whistler…70cms in 24 hours

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

WHISTLER, BC, January 15, 2010 – The latest storm to hit Whistler Blackcomb has dumped a whopping 70 centimetres or 28 inches in 24 hours, immersing the resort in deep winter conditions. Although the heavy snow and high winds prevented a number of lifts from opening today, the forecast for clearer skies this afternoon and tomorrow bodes well for weekend skiers and riders.

Whistler has the snowiest November ever recorded

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

WHISTLER, BC, December 1, 2009 – As the calendar flips over, it’s now official that November 2009 will go down in history as the snowiest month on record at Whistler Blackcomb, dating back to when the collection of weather data began 30 years ago.  November 2009 has seen a total accumulation of 560cm (220 inches) of snowfall, nearly four times that of November’s average snowfall of 148cm (58 inches). This is an increase of more than 19 per cent over the previous record of 469cm (185 inches) set in January 2006, and a 22 per cent increase over January 1992’s record of 459cm (181 inches). “Whistler is already known for reliable early season snowfall and this year’s record breaking start sets us up for an unbelievable season,” says Stuart Rempel, senior vice president of marketing & sales at Whistler Blackcomb. “To begin the season with a record breaker the likes of 5.5 metres of snowfall has certainly heightened the level of excitement in the resort, especially in this year, as we prepare to be a host venue for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympics Winter Games in February.”

And now, with the record broken, there is still an entire season of skiing and riding to look forward to. With a season that offers 192 days of skiing and riding, Whistler Blackcomb is already over half way towards the resort’s average annual snowfall of just over 10 metres (33 feet).

Big White - state of the art lift system

Blue Sky Day at Big White - 21 Nov 09
The ski and snowboard season has gotten off to a great start this year with most mountains in British Columbia able to open limited terrain in early November. With early season conditions, some terrain and lifts are unable to open, often resulting in longer lift lines.

Here at Big White Ski Resort, we’re one step ahead with our state of the art lifting system anchored by the Ridge Rocket Express Quad and the Snowghost Express 6 Pack. Together these lifts can move 5000 people per hour, or 10 people every 7 seconds,  from the base of the mountain, and this same area is the first pod to open here at Big White. This tandem system makes lift lines in that pod very efficient.

Big White has some great specials for the 2009/2010 season

* Buy 12 nights & get your 13th & 14th FREE
* Buy 6 nights & get your 7th night FREE

Jasper’s Marmot Basin gets 2 feet of snow in 48 hours!

Sunday, November 22nd, 2009

jasper’s marmot basin - powder nov 2009Once in a while, the stars align and the heavens open up and you are in the right place at the right time. Right now are those days at Marmot Basin. We have received a stunning 60 centimeters, two feet, of powder over the past 48 hours and 85 centimeters in the last seven days and it is still snowing. Yesterday morning, November 17,  the grooming team had to clear the parking lots with snow cats rather than with a plow because there was 25 centimeters of snow that fell overnight. Lifties were shoveling out the load and unload ramps of the chairlifts along with their buried mazes.

To say Marmot Basin is having an excellent start is an understatement. This is the first time we have had 100 centimeters of settled snow at mid mountain in the month of November and it is only November 18th. Today Marmot Basin opened even more terrain and we now have 53 runs open. The avalanche team is working hard to open the Knob Chair. They will have to do considerable avalanche work to re-establish the safety of this area before we can open it to skiers and boarders, however, we expect the Knob area to open soon.

Skiers and riders are hooting and hollering as they ride the New Canadian Rockies Express high speed quad chair.  2000 vertical feet of perfect powder skiing and riding from top to bottom on our new quad chair. This is a perfect time to head to Marmot Basin as there is another storm headed our way and we are going to need snorkels to ski and breathe if this keeps up.
